The Grotta Gigante registered in the Guinness book of Records as the show cave with the biggest chamber in the world, is a treasure not to be missed by anyone who loves nature, science and history.
The cave is located near Trieste, the beautiful capital of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy, only a few kilometers away from the border to Slovenia, and is surrounded by its natural Karst setting.
The Grotta Gigante is a must see for those staying in the area as well as for those passing the city of Trieste on the highway that connects Italy to Slovenia and Croatia.
The cave is only a few minutes away from the highway and it can be a pleasant stopover when travelling.
The Grotta Gigante is open all year round with guided tours that last one hour.
The 850 m (2,800 ft) long tourist path, which is safe, well-illuminated and easy to walk on, allows visitors to descend up to 101.10 m (330 ft) into the cave.
Visitors can walk through a huge natural chamber, the Grande Caverna, that is almost 100 m (328 ft) high and has a volume of 365,000 cubic meters (12,900,000 cubic feet).
Along the entire tourist path impressive stalactites, stalagmites and natural concretions of various colors can be seen.
The cave temperature is 11°C (52° F) during all seasons.
In the Visitors Center there is also the Speleological Scientific Museum.
There are two convenient parking lots, a coffee shop and a souvenir shop.
